nine miles

Old drove roads run west,

skirt the green mounds,

side step the idling,

sweet breath of the spring.

Under the flanks of a hoof run sky,

over the straddling crown,

the plains roll on, perennial, sun drunk

while cattle's low memory

runs through the flowers.

Thistles grow on these Southern banks too

and I walk alone among the old droves roads

and ghosts of a people displaced.
